Behind the Scenes: How We Turn Coffee Grounds Into Soap

From Bean to Bar: Our Coffee Soap Process

At 2nd Ground, we believe in giving new life to what others see as waste. Our coffee soap process transforms upcycled coffee grounds into high-quality, handmade skincare products that are both eco-friendly and luxurious. But how exactly do we do it? Let’s take you behind the scenes of our small-batch production process to show you how sustainability meets skincare.

1. Sourcing Coffee Grounds: Partnering with Local Coffee Shops

Our journey starts in the heart of Brooklyn. We partner with local coffee shops to collect used coffee grounds, ensuring that every bar of soap has a story rooted in the community. Instead of letting these grounds go to waste, we upcycle them into a beneficial exfoliant.

Why upcycled coffee grounds?

  • They naturally exfoliate the skin, removing dead cells for a smooth, refreshed feel.
  • They contain antioxidants that help protect the skin.
  • They reduce waste and promote circular sustainability.

Fun Fact: Each soap bar diverts over 3 shots of espresso from landfills!

2. Drying & Preparing the Coffee Grounds

Once collected, the coffee grounds go through a meticulous drying process. This step is crucial to prevent moisture buildup and ensure they are ready for soap-making.

How We Do It:

  • Spread grounds evenly for air drying to remove excess moisture.
  • Use a low-temperature dehydration method to retain natural benefits.
  • Sift and sort to achieve a consistent texture for our soap.

This preparation step ensures that every scrub in your shower feels just right—not too rough, not too soft.

3. Crafting the Soap: Small-Batch, Cold Process Perfection

Our cold process soap-making method allows us to create rich, moisturizing bars that are gentle on the skin and long-lasting.

The Soap Formula:

  • Organic and Natural Oils: For a creamy lather and hydration.
  • Balanced Formula: Helps maintain moisture and creates a bubbly effect.
  • Essential & Fragrance Oils: Provide an aromatherapeutic experience.
  • Upcycled Coffee Grounds: Deliver the perfect exfoliation.

Each batch is carefully mixed, poured into molds, and left to cure for about a month—allowing the soap to harden naturally while preserving its skin-loving benefits.

Small Batch = High Quality: Unlike mass-produced soaps, we make limited quantities to ensure every bar gets the attention it deserves.

4. Hand-Wrapping & Eco-Friendly Packaging

Once fully cured, every soap bar is hand-wrapped in plastic-free, recycled parchment paper, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability. Our packaging:

  • Is 100% biodegradable.
  • Contains no plastic waste.
  • Features minimalist yet eye-catching branding that reflects our mission.

Each soap is wrapped with care—by hand, not machine—because we believe in craftsmanship over convenience.
